Limb Lengthening Surgery
Limb Lengthening is a surgical procedure to lengthen bones in the arms or legs. Lengthening works by separating the bone (osteotomy) and very slowly pulling the bone segments apart (distraction),therefore new bone tissue is formed in the space between the fractured bones (osteotomy gap). When bone segments slowly separate, bone regenerates, resulting in increased bone length.In conclusion limb lengthening is achieved by using the body’s own capacity to regenerate new bone as well as the soft tissues, ligaments, fascia, blood vessels and nerves that surround and support it.
Limb Lengthening Surgery Methods
The LON method is a combined method. It is applied by inserting an intramedullary nail into the bone and the external fixator is fixed to the bone from the outside. After the lengthening process is finished, the fixator is removed.
